10 years ago (maybe less) we would find it hard to believe how incredibly reliant we’d become on the simple mobile phone. The days when a text message was no more than 40 or 50 characters long and upon opening it slowly crawled across the tiny screen for what seemed like an eternity.

Now, the idea of a standard text message seems positively archaic when we have a multitude of instant messaging applications with the capabilities of sending symbols, pictures and videos, as well as the actual words themselves.

But what else do we heavily rely on when it comes to our smartphones?

The Internet

Of course without our access to the world wide web, many of us would simply be lost, and to be able to have it on the go is sheer technological genius. We can catch up on the latest news stories, check our emails and share our thoughts and images via social media platforms in the blink of an eye.

The Camera

In the rise of digital photography came the inspirational notion that a camera and a phone could be combined. For quick snaps on holidays or nights out, having your high mega-pixel camera with its excellent flash and plethora of editing programs to hand is nothing short of essential in today’s society.

GPS

Location is everything. People are now able to track (to the precise position) where they are at the click of a button and also follow where their friends and family are via fabulous smartphone technology, which works like a satellite navigation system.

The Selfie Phenomenon - Will The Craze Ever End?

Row.co.uk Blog

Taking a selfie has become a worldwide trend in recent years, with individuals all across the world taking them and uploading them to social media, sending them to friends and using them as profile photos; but will the selfie phenomenon ever end?

Why Is the Selfie Craze So Popular?

It is only in the last few years that the term 'selfie' has meant anything to anyone, and previously it would have scratched heads and confused even the most media savvy of people. Why the selfie craze is so popular is largely down to self-esteem; though many do link this to an individual's vanity. It is a way to let people know what you're wearing, where you are and is popular amongst women who are proud of their hair or makeup that day. The selfie phenomenon is especially apparent on the photography centred social media platform Instagram, where hashtags such as ‘selfie’ or ‘new selfie’ are linked to millions of photos.

The Selfie Craze: Different Types of Selfie

There are largely two main types of selfie; those that are taken for serious photographic purposes, such as a selfie before a night out, and those that are more light-hearted, such as a selfie with a favourite celebrity. Selfies with celebrities have become a trend in itself with many people aiming to get a photograph with famous actors, singers and even politicians. Additionally, another trend within the selfie craze is to take selfies in unusual places. Previously selfies of individuals at the top of skyscrapers, before they jump out of a plane and visiting famous sights such as the Grand Canyon have been seen across the web.

The selfie phenomenon is one that shows no signs of ending anytime soon and with the increasing rise of social media and smartphone usage, the selfie is likely to become more of a part of the media culture. However, the selfie phenomenon does show signs of evolving; for example, in recent months, group selfies have gained the name 'usie' and are popular among friends and families alike. Furthermore, though selfies were once a slightly embarrassing and an out of place thing to be seen doing in busy public places, the evolution of the selfie phenomenon has seen it grow into something that is deemed relatively normal.
