Your laptop is probably right up there with your smartphone in the list of items you absolutely cannot live without. For many of us, a laptop is now the primary tool we use for our work. And with the growth in popularity of BYOD schemes - as in, Bring Your Own Device to the office - it’s not as if we can simply rely on our employers to bail us out if something goes wrong.

Aha, you say - but isn’t my laptop covered by my home contents insurance should the worst happen? Possibly, and you may well have chosen to sign up for an opt-in extra that adds your laptop to your home policy. However, very good arguments can still be made for buying standalone insurance for your device. Here are five reasons why.

Lower excess

If you make a claim for a damaged laptop on your home insurance, your claim will be subject to the standard excess on your policy. In the case of an older, lower value laptop, this might be more than the laptop is actually worth, or certainly more than the repair costs. With a dedicated laptop policy, you will get an excess that reflects the value of the device, and often get repairs thrown in, too. At Row.co.uk, we include unlimited repairs in our laptop cover.

Higher payout caps

Particularly if you have recently upgraded your laptop to a brand spanking new, top of the range beast of a machine, you may find that your existing home insurance caps payouts well below what the device is worth. If you are going to insure your laptop, you might as well get covered for its full value.

Be covered everywhere

Depending on the specific policy, some home insurance does cover contents that are damaged, lost or stolen out of the home. But this is not universal, and in most cases it will certainly not protect your laptop for overseas trips. With a standalone laptop policy like those we offer, you don’t have to worry - you are covered for damage, breakdown, theft and loss wherever you are, home or abroad.

Protect your home premium

In truth, home contents insurance is not really designed to cover individual items. You pay your premium to cover everything you own against catastrophic loss caused by burglary, flooding, fire and so on. As with any insurance, making a claim will bump up your premium. What you have to ask yourself is, for the sake of one little laptop breaking down, is it worth the whole of your contents insurance becoming more expensive? For what it costs extra, you are often better off with standalone insurance.

Enjoy the perks

The laptop insurance we offer at Row.co.uk comes with a number of special little perks that you will only get with a dedicated policy. We have already mentioned unlimited repairs - we also offer a 24 hour replacement service for your device, once your claim has been approved. That’s the kind of service you get when you go with a specialist.

iPhone 5s: What’s New?

iPhone 5s: What’s New?

If you’re upgrading from its predecessor, the iPhone 5, then you’d be forgiven for thinking not much. For all intense and purposes, it looks pretty similar with its head-turning good looks. Yes, it still retains the all too familiar and much loved aluminium and glass shell.

But what makes it distinguishable as the new all singing, all dancing iPhone 5s, besides its new colour way, is its new operating system. Welcome the iOS 7.

iOS 7

The new operating system enables you to easily navigate and make the most of the iPhone 5s’ new features, which include AirDrop and Control Centre. Multitasking is easy, faster and more enjoyable too. The iPhone 5s offers a more streamlined user experience than previous models.

AirDrop

This new feature allows you to swiftly share videos, photos and contacts via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In fact, it’s so versatile you can even use it to share anything from an app, just as long as it has a share button.

Control Centre

This is where you’ll find all of those apps and controls you continuously use – all in one handy accessible place. To access, just swipe up from any screen, and that includes the Lock screen.

Touch ID

This new and exciting feature allows you to do away with inputting a passcode to unlock and access your phone. Instead, you can now use the rather smart and nifty fingerprint scanning feature. Its clever 360-degree recognition of your fingerprint means it will unlock it whichever way up you happen to be holding it.

iSight camera

This is undoubtedly the best iPhone camera to date. Features include a larger sensor, aperture and pixels, true tone flash, auto image stabilisation and continuous burst mode. Also live video zoom, Slo-mo video, photo filters, panoramic mode and square photo mode, which is ideal for sharing photos to social networking sites.

Apps

The iPhone 5s has many in-built apps to make your life easier. These include the iSight camera, photos and video, as well as maps, mail, messages, music, torch, timer and calculator apps. Video and audio calls come alive with FaceTime and copies of your coupons, boarding passes and tickets can be scanned with Passbook. Safari is still the web browser of choice and Siri, the helpful personal assistant, will execute tasks when you don’t want to. These include making calls, writing texts, setting up reminders and answering your questions.

Colours

The iPhone 5s is available in champagne, silver or space grey. Champagne is essentially a light gold colour, the silver is self-explanatory and the space grey makes a change from the standard black.

Weight

Whether you’re a fan or not of the substantial feel of previous iPhones, the new iPhone 5s is slightly lighter than earlier models. It’s still incredibly comfortable to use measuring 123.8 x 6 x 7.6mm, but only weighs 112g.

All in all, the new iPhone 5s has some great additional features and a brighter, colourful and more powerful user experience thanks to the new iOS 7.
