Gas Safety Week - Common Boiler Breaks

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the Gas Safety Register’s annual Gas Safety Week campaign. Over the past decade, this event has played a crucial role in raising awareness about gas safety issues in the home, which sadly still lead to dozens of avoidable tragedies every year.

Which is why Row.co.uk is proud to be backing such an important and worthwhile cause.

So what is gas safety all about? Most homes these days contain one or more gas appliances, whether a boiler, a cooker or gas fires/heaters. Gas is a very useful fuel, but it is also very volatile, which makes safety considerations around its use in our homes critical.

Maintenance is key. Put simply, if you do not take good care of your boiler and other gas appliances, you risk them becoming a threat to the health and safety of you and your family. It is recommended that boilers should be serviced by a Gas Safe-certified engineer once a year. Yet it is thought nearly two thirds of boilers in UK homes have not been serviced in the last 12 months.

The silent killer

But what exactly could go wrong if you don’t stay on top of servicing and maintenance for your boiler? By far and away the biggest risk is carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ because it has no taste or smell, yet in sufficient quantities it is deadly poisonous.

Any fuel that burns, be it gas, wood, coal or anything else, gives off carbon dioxide as a by-product of the burning process. However, in some conditions where the fuel is not able to burn as efficiently as it would do normally, the closely related chemical carbon monoxide starts to be given off instead.

Carbon dioxide is harmless and is one of the main gases that makes up the air around us (although it is a main culprit behind global warming). Its cousin carbon monoxide, however, is anything but harmless. When enough of it is released into an enclosed space like the room of a house, anyone who breathes it in will start to experience dizziness, nausea, headaches, shortness of breath, tiredness and confusion. Eventually, this can lead to unconsciousness and even death.

There are around 60 fatalities from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK every year.

How do I know if my boiler is at risk?

Aside from regular servicing, the best way to protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning is to install a detector. Choose a carbon monoxide alarm which meets the BS EN 50291 Kitemark industry standard and works along the same principles as a smoke detector.

There are also some tell-tale signs to look out for which may indicate that your boiler is not burning as efficiently as it should do - which is when carbon monoxide emissions start. Your pilot light changing colour from blue to yellow or orange is the most obvious sign. If you spot this you should call out a qualified engineer immediately. You might also notice signs of soot accompanied with a coal-like musty smell.

6 iOS 10 Features to Look Forward to

With the much awaited iPhone 7 due to be released in September, there has been a lot of excitement and speculation among iPhone fans and enthusiasts with regards to Apple’s upcoming iOS 10. Beta versions have already been released of the new software for the public as well as for the developers.

iOS 10 consists of a multitude of new features and functionalities that will truly take the iPhone to next level. Here are 6 features of the upcoming OS that will make you want to upgrade as soon as possible.

1.    Storage Optimization

With iOS 10, you will no longer have to worry about your storage needs; forget about deleting that high quality music video, podcast, or your favourite movie and instead, add more data. Under settings, you will be able to see the option ‘Optimize Storage’. Just turn it on and your phone will automatically delete music that hasn’t been played for some time. This feature will be useful for 16 GB iPhones, although iPhone 7 will no longer be available in the 16 GB option.

2.    Let Your Friends Know Your Whereabouts

With an iPhone, you can share your location with friends and family members, but in the iOS 10, you will be able to directly share your location with a friend. The messages app has been enhanced and is now more context oriented; for example, if a friend texts you, “Where are you?” the ability to share your location will pop up.

3.    Remove those Pesky Stock Apps

Do you remember those days when you bought an iPhone and wanted to remove the stock apps which you never needed, but couldn’t do so? Well, with the arrival of iOS 10, you will be able to finally delete those storage consuming apps like stocks, calendar, contacts, music, podcasts, watch app, weather, compass, FaceTime, iBooks, news, maps, etc.

4.    Applicable Filters to Live Photos

Ever taken a live photo with your iPhone? If not, then you are missing out. It was initially introduced in the iOS 9 and it allows you to create the effect of an animated picture. However, you couldn’t apply the stock filters present in the camera app to live photos. In the iOS 10, you will finally be able to do so.

5.    No Need to Watch a Video in Full Screen

iOS 10’s mobile web browser Safari will support video playback in the inline mode, without having to watch a video in full screen mode. When you tap on a video, it will begin playing in full screen, but you will have the ability to minimize it by tapping on the minimize button in the lower right corner of the screen.

6.    It Will Improve Your Sleep Pattern

The new iOS 10 will enable a new function in the clock app known as ‘Bedtime’. The purpose of this function is to help you to improve your sleep by reminding you when to go to bed and when to wake up. You will need to answer a few basic questions in order to set it up.
