Having a rat infestation at home can make everything upside down and can put everyone in a state of anxiety. Rats chew on everything so even if you hide all the food away, don’t be surprised to have any socks, wires or wooden furniture to be nibbled on. It is really important for you to eliminate any rodent infestation in your home because of hygiene reasons. Do you know that their excrement is poisonous?  You want to get rid of it but want to do it in the most humane way possible. Here are some easy ways to get rid of this pesky rodent:

1.     Rat trap

Get a humane mouse/rat trap—one that doesn’t snap and kills it. Get the one that is humane and is more like a cage and just traps them. This is perfect if you only have one or two rats at maximum. All you need is a good bait to lure the little rodent into the cage and bam! You have one trapped rat in a cage that you can dispose off.

2.     Peppermint

If there is anything rats hate, it is a strong fragrant smell. So get some cotton balls and some peppermint essential oil.  Just put 20 drops of peppermint oil in each cotton ball and keep them in the different areas where you have seen the rat or suspect it comes. This trick works as a great rat repellent.

3.     Pepper spray

Not the kind that we keep in our purses but a homemade pepper spray. You will need the following:

·       A big bowl

·       Gloves

·       Half a gallon of a jug

·       Spray bottle

·       12 cups of water

·       3 tablespoons of hot pepper flakes

·       1 cup chopped red chilli peppers (habaneras preferably)

·       Cheesecloth

Blend the chopped chilli and pepper flakes in a food processor until they are in a finer form. Boil the water and throw this chilli/pepper mixture in it. Let it stay for a day and then strain out the chilli flakes from a cheesecloth. Put the chilli water in a spray and spritz away. It is advised you wear goggles while doing so. This is best for outdoor areas but you can also spray some inside.

4.     Aluminium foil

Who knew that aluminium foil would do wonders in repelling the rats and mice away from your home?  They think that the foil is made from sharp metal and they try to avoid it passing through it. So place foil in any openings, nooks, crannies and holes that you suspect are used by the rat.

Many people don’t have a home emergency insurance that covers the expenses for rodent infestations. Make sure to get a good home emergency insurance like https://row.co.uk/home-emergency-cover to cover any issues like these in the future.
